Brighid's Fire Small Art Print

♥ Brighid's Fire Small Art Print ♥

Print taken from my original artwork 'Brighid's Fire'

I've always been intrigued by prehistoric cave art especially the red hand prints left on cave walls by our ancient ancestors, it reminds me of stripping back to our earliest forms of creativity like the way children first start painting with simple hand prints.

Having recently purchased some mica powdered pigments to try I mixed the red oxide with water & the colour was so intense I had the sudden urge to cover my hands in it & work directly onto the paper like our ancestors did in the caves thousands of years ago, it felt really good to work directly with my hands onto the paper but I had no idea where I was going or what the painting would end up like, then I remembered an article I had read about the Goddess Brighid & her fire of creativity as the red oxide looked like fire, I begin to imagine her figure & associated animals in the blobs of red/orange paint & worked intuitively with white gouache & pencil to bring out the detail. I used Gold mica to pick out the halo around Brighid's head to symbolise her links with the Sun & her place as a Goddess of Sovereignty.

Brighid is one of the most important Goddesses in British history, Britain is even named after her as 'Brigantia' she gave her name to the Celtic land in the North of England. She is a guardian of the land & is the triple Goddess of healing, smith craft & poetry. As a Goddess of fire, the hearth & energy her fire is the fire of creativity offering a guiding light to people in times of darkness. Brighid's fire is a fire of healing, divination and protection.

She is the fire inside of all of us, the part of us that burns with the same creative desire which inspired our ancestors to place their painted hands upon the cave wall.
